In this film debut for Withney Houston, she plays Rachel Marron, a music superstar who is being stalked. Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner), a professional bodyguard and former secret service agent, is hired to protect her.

The film then follows Rachel Marron's life through her career and family. Performances include her singing hits such as " I will always love you" and " I have nothing". Frank Farmer successfully protects her from danger and as a result of his protection, Rachel falls in love with Frank. He initially tries to keep the relationship professional, but the two sleep together. However, recognizing that their relationship may compromise his protection of her, Frank breaks off their affair. Rachel must put her trust in Frank ahead of her own desire for success. In the end, Frank's duty is fulfilled, having successfully protected Rachel, and they part with her kiss. Frank then moves on to his next assignment to guard an archbishop .

La vita perfetta di Mary Haines va in crisi quando, facendo la manicure da Saks sulla Quinta Strada, apprende dalla ciarliera estetista che suo marito, un magnate della finanza, ha una relazione appassionata con la commessa addetta alla profumeria, la spruzzatrice. Come se non bastasse, la sua migliore amica Sylvia, per non perdere il posto di lavoro alla guida di una rinomata rivista, vende la privacy di Mary a una nota cronista mondana in cambio di una rubrica con la sua firma. Sconvolta, Mary comincia a preoccuparsi innanzitutto di se stessa e, così facendo, finisce per ritrovare la fiducia e l'affetto degli altri. 
Queste donne sono molto diverse tra di loro, per ceto sociale, carriera lavorative, età ed anche gusti sessuali ma sono tutte solidali e legate. Non mancano le battute riuscite, in bocca a personaggi secondari di grandissima presa, dalla madre di Mary  alla tata Tilly Scott Pederson, dalla finta burbera Cloris Leachman alla filosofa pragmatica Bette Midler.
